Interns and Resident Information XML Format

Published 06/07/2023

Teaching providers are required to submit Intern and Resident Information System (IRIS) data for all interns and residents claimed on the submitted cost report. For cost reports with a fiscal year beginning on or after:

  • October 1, 2021: Use the IRIS XML format to file your data
  • October 1, 2022: Make sure the total graduate medical education and indirect medical education full time equivalents reported on the IRIS match the total reported on your as-filed cost report. Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) will reject the cost report if this information doesn’t match.

Approved XML IRIS Vendors
The following software vendors have submitted sample XML IRIS files to CMS that have been confirmed to meet the requirements of the new XML IRIS file format. Providers are not required to use vendors from this list.

  • Besler — iRotations
  • Health Financial System — HFSSoft IRIS

  • New Innovations
