A DEX® Z-Code is a unique identifier that clearly identifies the test being performed on a claim and allows payers to know exactly what service was rendered.

Palmetto GBA, LLC is the owner/licensor of the DEX® Registry that includes the DEX Z-Codes and clinical content comprising information about laboratory tests for molecular diagnostics. Palmetto has entered an exclusive partnership with Optum® to license Z-Codes® and the DEX® Diagnostics Exchange process, allowing Optum to use Palmetto GBA’s molecular diagnostics expertise to support health plans in making coverage and pricing decisions

Optum enables commercial payers to use Z-Codes and the DEX Registry. As health plans adopt DEX Z-Codes for molecular tests, laboratories will be directed to register in DEX for their tests. See links below for a list of health plans participating in DEX and requirements.
